Pritish Nandy a Film Producer, Writer, and Journalist-The Visionary Behind Bollywood Hits, Has Passed Away

So, while one of the most prolific producers during the early 2000s was Pritish Nandy, one of his films that really made a mark included works like Kaante, Jhankaar Beats, Chameli, and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi.

On Wednesday, the producer, writer, and journalist passed away in his seventy-third year. Nandy was a bright figure in the multifaceted panorama of Indian journalism, poetry, and cinema. Several Bollywood celebrities paid tribute to him on social media platforms.

Life of Pritish Nandy

Born in Bhagalpur, Bihar, in 1951, Pritish Nandy had a long and very illustrious career and wore many hats: painter, journalist, parliamentarian, media and television personality, animal activist, and maker of films, TV and streaming content. In 1993, he founded Pritish Nandy Communications, of which he was non-executive chairman and creative mentor till his death.

Soon after he shifted from making TV shows to film production with Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi in 2001. Over the years, he made several movies which included Chameli, Kaante, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi?, Shaadi Ke Side Effects. A noted journalist, he worked with various publications but is best remembered as the managing editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India, transforming it into one of the most respected publications in India. In 1998, he was elected to Rajya Sabha on a Shiv Sena ticket and served as a member of parliament for six years.

Bollywood Mourned

Kareena Kapoor, who starred in Sudhir Mishra’s 2004 film Chameli, backed by Pritish and daughter Rangita’s Pritish Nandy Communications, shared a couple of pictures from the sets of that film on her Instagram Stories. One of them featured her smiling and chatting with Pritish in between shots. She looked beautiful and resplendent in her iconic red Chameli costume. Kareena posted the red heart, folded hands, and infinity emojis with the pictures.

Kareena’s Chameli director Sudhir Mishra paid tribute to him on his X handle as well. The late producer is also known for his association in the 2003 political drama Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi . “Pritish Nandy changed my life. He could only Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi. He taught me so much. I am so sorry Pritish Da. I couldn’t come out with an idea for the sequel,” Sudhir wrote.

Sanjay Dutt also pay Tribute

Sanjay Dutt, who featured in Sanjay Gupta’s 2002 action thriller Kaante and the 2005 psychological drama Shabd by Leena Yadav, both produced by Nandy, also came in with a X post: “A true creative genius and a kind soul, you will be missed sir. #PritishNandy (folded hands).” The post was accompanied by a black-and-white picture of Pritish.

Anil Kapoor also shared this picture of Nandy through X: “Shocked and shattered by losing my dear friend Pritish Nandy. A fearless editor, brave soul, and man of his words. He embodied integrity like none other.”

Pritish Nandy has been a renowned journalist who was the host for the famous talk show, The Pritish Nandy Show, over Doordarshan during the 1990s, where he interviewed a number of celebrities.
