Kangana’s Shocking Confession: Why She Won’t Make Another Political Film Again

Kangana

One of Bollywood’s most vocal and brazen personalities, Kangana Ranaut has consistently proven she is one of those people who is never afraid to take up challenging roles and controversial subjects, both in front of the camera and behind it. But in a shocking revelation, the actress-director has announced that she will never make another political film again.

This comes after the grueling and exhausting experience of directing and acting in Emergency, a film about India’s much-debated Emergency period under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kangana had pushed through with the project, but now she opens up on how the experience had affected her emotionally, financially, and personally.

The Unseen Struggles of Directing Political Drama: Kangana’s Journey with Emergency

Kangana’s second directorial project after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Emergency promised to be a bold exploration of one of India’s most tumultuous political periods. But what started off as a big vision turned out to be a series of hurdles that almost sucked the life out of her.

The film had much delay, legal battle, and an array of challenges, including the long and very contentious approval process with the Central Board of Film Certification. All this became a regular source of frustration, but Kangana’s resolve to see it through never ebbed. Still, she concedes that it took its toll, and she was disillusioned about making films on real political events.

Director-Producer-Actress: Cost of Pandemic

The emergency production was going to be hectic in itself and the pandemic created more problems at the time for Kangana when she had assumed the role of director and also producer. A global crew of payment protocols only amplified the pressure over her. The monetary requirements were unyielding, despite the delay in shooting, and Kangana found herself fighting against the harsh truth of keeping up with a budget on a production that was facing an ever-changing situation.

“I was struggling to make this film,” she admitted candidly to News18. The financial cost complemented by logistic troubles left her exhausted and drained of the very fact that one has to come to terms with the heavy loads a political movie bears on a filmmaker.

A personal cost: Stress of filmmaking affects Kangana’s relationships

Filmmaking a political is no easy exercise, and so Kangana rapidly came to appreciate that wearing as many hats left a heavy scar on her mental and personal world. In addition to the financial pressure, she was dealing with emotional exhaustion that spilled into her personal life. With no other person to talk to about her frustrations, Kangana was unloading all her stress onto the ear of her sister, Rangoli Chandel, and at times bearing its brunt.

“When you have a stressful job like mine, you end up taking your family for granted,” Kangana reflected. That’s where the constant strain shows impact-the first and closest ones have to feel its impact.

The Break Point: Kangana Will Never Make Another Film Political Again

Months of tussling to survive financial and mounting stress; and the weight of emotions behind the management of a controversial subject matter, when Kangana got the epiphany: it’s much harder than it’s thought to do political filmmaking, especially of real-life persons. “It’s so hard, and now I understand why very few attempt it, much less with living characters,” she admitted.

The personal cost of bringing a politically charged story to life, especially one dealing with sensitive and controversial historical events, made her realize that the creative and emotional toll wasn’t worth repeating. It was a decision made after careful consideration—Emergency would be her last foray into political films.

With passion and style that leaves no room for compromise, Kangana is all set to pour energy into projects which will give her new creative scope. Her future film ventures will now be free of the political matrix but will definitely speak of how she has transformed as an artist and a chronicler.

It’s now clear that Emergency is being released on 17 January, 2025. Kangana Ranaut believes she has already gained enough with this experience for which she could build her roadmap to the new phase.
