Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, that started in 2008, is one of India’s most popular shows, bringing a much-needed laught and glee into the lives of Indians from all strata of society. What this show has given us is characters etched into our memory forever, but few are as memorable as Dr. Hansraj Hathi. Characterized by a very jovial nature and a famous dialogue line, “Sahi baat hai!

” Dr. Hathi was perhaps the darling character of the audience, thanks to Azad’s absolutely seamless timing for comedy and his warm presence on the screen. Kavi Kumar Azad entered TMKOC in 2009 when Nirmal Soni, the original Dr. Hathi, played from 2008 to 2009. Life added to the character was brought by Azad, and soon he became loved for portraying the lovable doctor with an insatiable appetite. In 2018, Kavi Azad lost his life and career when at the age of just 46 years, he died of a cardiac arrest. Though he was snatched away by death prematurely, still Azad’s work on the show and his legacy lives on in the hearts of the viewers of TMKOC.

Nirmal Soni took over the part, but for many of the viewers, his role cannot be taken over by the latter.
Career History Before TMKOC, Kavi Kumar Azad had already worked in the Indian television industry. He has been a part of numerous serials like Junior G, Chacha Chaudhary, and Shararat. These serials gave Azad a good exposure to the screen as an actor who is otherwise very versatile-comedies and family dramas, so to say. But it was Dr. Hathi, the character played in TMKOC that brought him into each house.

From backstage to the central character of one of India’s biggest sitcoms, he has proof for his hard work and his talents.

Azad was reportedly paid 25,000 rupees per episode of TMKOC. That became a good income for the actor considering the uninterrupted popularity and viewership of TMKOC which ensured a steady income in the purse of Azad. He was able to enjoy a stable financially sound and comfortable life altogether while working for his passion for acting. One interesting fact is that the reported salary of Kavi Kumar Azad was the same amount his predecessor, Nirmal Soni, is reportedly being paid now as a part of playing Dr. Hathi on this show. The pay indicates the importance of the character, Dr. Hathi, in the show and its value despite Kavi Kumar Azad having left this world.

The pay scales between Azad and Soni are on par, considering that Dr. Hathi would have to be an important constituent of TMKOC’s continuity and that both men performed well for the money they would receive.

Comparison with Ambika Ranjankar Earnings

In Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, co-artist of Kavi Kumar Azad, Ambika Ranjankar, plays the role of Komal Hathi, a doting and supportive wife of Dr. Hathi. Together they form one of the funniest and charming couples of the show. While Azad was reportedly paid a sum of 25,000 rupees per episode, Ambika Ranjankar is reportedly paid around 30,000 rupees per episode. This makes the salary of Azad approximately 16.66% lower than that of Ranjankar’s.

She had joined the show from the very beginning, which could be a reason why she was better paid than any of the female characters in the series. Komal is a character that adds much sensibility and meaning to the track of Dr Hathi, and thus some may call that her monies were bigger because of the love of the public with the actress playing her. The chemistry between both the actors made the Hathi family well and truly an integral part of the TMKOC experience.
