Aamir Khan almost Quit Films; son Junaid convinced him otherwise…
I had an emotional moment, where I feel, as if I had given my whole life to cinema and I haven’t been there for my family,” Aamir said.
Actor Aamir Khan finally speaks about the real reasons behind quitting films. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir revealed he had taken this decision much before the release of Lal Singh Chaddha. He also revealed it was his children-the son Junaid khan and daughter Ira Khan-who convinced him not to give up films entirely.
Aamir recalls a time when he even considered quitting the film world
He shares, “After Covid-19, I sat alone and realized that nearly my entire adult life-from age 18, when I started as an assistant, up to now-has been devoted entirely to cinema. It dawned upon me that this intense focus on films may have kept me from being present for my relationships: my kids, my siblings, my family, and both Kiran and Reena during our marriages. I felt I hadn’t fully been there for them. This realization came to me halfway through filming Laal Singh Chaddha.

Aamir Khan opened up about a deeply emotional moment
When he considered stopping films. “I had this intense realization that I’d dedicated my entire life to films and, in doing so hadn’t been there for my family in the way I wanted. It was overwhelming; I felt a deep sense of guilt and dissatisfaction with how I’d prioritized things,” he revealed. “In that moment, I thought about my 35 years in the industry and decided maybe it was time to focus on my personal life, to be present for my family. I actually called them up and said, ‘Look, I’m not going to do films anymore. I want to spend time with you all.’
This was an emotional decision and not based on frustration with cinema at all. It happens to be one of those emotions that cut across and is a very strong part of who I am.
Aamir Khan spoke about how much of a difference his son Junaid’s advice had made in deciding to stay in the industry
Aamir said that he was so firm to give up acting and focus solely on family that Junaid said something to him that changed everything. “Junaid made me see that I was jumping from extreme to extreme,” he recalled.
“Then one day, he told me that I did not have to choose between films and family totally; that there was a middle ground. He said, ‘There’s a way you can still make movies and also be present for us. You don’t have to abandon your passion to be part of our lives.'” This realization made Aamir understand that he could well strike a balance between his work and personal life instead of forsaking one for the other.
Aamir’s latest end has been Laal Singh Chaddha, the direction of which has been given to Advait Chandan. Released much in the midst of anticipation, the film starred Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh, and Naga Chaitanya, and was an official adaptation of the iconic Hollywood classic Forrest Gump featuring Tom Hanks.
Laal Singh Chaddha was, in many senses, an extremely ambitious film, but it marked a reflective period for Aamir, wherein he actually started really introspecting over his journey in the film industry, his legacy, and his relationships outside of cinema. Junaid’s words were the guiding light to make him realize that his love for cinema and his wanting to be there for family could hang together.
