Oscars 2025: Laapataa Ladies Actress Chhaya Kadam Opens Up About Her Heartbreaking Feelings Regarding Oscars Snub
This Indian Official entry to Oscars 2025 under Best International Feature film category, Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, was disowned. Fans and filmmakers expressed fairly disappointment reactions at the trailer launch of the movie over its cast which features actors Chhaya Kadam and Sparsh Shrivastava. However, this Kadam gave the view of feeling slighted and, at the same time, said one has to give the director his moment of thought about the product.
Chhaya Kadam on Oscars Snub
Chhaya Kadam, who played a pivotal role in Laapataa Ladies, spoke to News18 about the film’s exclusion from the Academy’s shortlist. Kadam admitted it was disheartening, especially after the team’s high hopes for the film. “It’s disappointing, but such setbacks teach us to work harder,” she said, stressing that the team’s efforts and dedication should not be overshadowed by the snub.
Kadam admits that she hasn’t spoken to the director Kiran Rao about the result yet. “I want to give her some time. She just returned from the USA after spending about a month there,” said Kadam. The actress, however, was still proud that she was part of a different story and part of India’s representation to the world.
Speaking of the road that took her to an Oscar, Kadam said: “Actually, we have recently only met each other, just had an occasion not too far back; so both were actually chock-a-block full with optimism as for their respective prospects.” Really believed “we’d advance fairly much in the race” from where Kadam spoke of All We Imagine As Light-which earned it its very recent nod nomination for the Best Motion Picture: Non-English Language-in the next phase for other project opportunities.
Sparsh Shrivastava Finds Positivity in Dejected Experience
The actor who essayed Deepak Kumar of Laapataa Ladies had told that if he hasn’t been relegated, then so be it, but it’s such a high point for him.
“Just that I have reached the Oscars with my first film itself is huge,” said Shrivastava. He said it is a big thing in itself that he got to represent India on such a platform, and the result notwithstanding. Shrivastava also hailed the effort of the cast and crew who, he said, “have given it from the heart and soul”. “We cannot control the outcome but we respect the academy’s decision,” he added further.
The Bigger Picture for Indian Cinema
Although Laapataa Ladies did not make the short list, Chhaya Kadam feels that it has given a journey to the minds of many Indian filmmakers and continue to strive to be as good as any other one. Films like Laapataa Ladies, All We Imagine As Light, and 12th Fail cannot always look forward to financial success but set a new frontier for storytelling and artistic applause.
Kadam said such movies have a niche appeal and are not as easily available at the theater as some of the other movies. “But these projects are definitely greater than just the box office number,” she said proudly.
“These films pave the way for the future of Indian cinema,” she declared.
Though Chhaya Kadam and Sparsh Shrivastava did not win the Oscars contest, this was a learning experience for the duo. It was the first step as Indian cinema continued its momentum in storytelling for the masses and the world at large.
Whether it is in Laapataa Ladies or even up coming films, Kadam and Shrivastava are working hard to make this happen. “The dream does not end here,” said Kadam. “We will come back stronger and try to shoot higher.”
