Payal Kapadia on losing to Golden Globes: “‘All We Imagine As Light,’ the Journey is not over yet”

PAYAL KAPADIA, GOLDEN GLOBE

Payal Kapadia, on the night of the Golden Globes, decided to go Instagram way to express what not winning any award meant for her on Monday.

Even though Payal Kapadia’s flick, All We Imagine As Light, didn’t bag any honor at the 2025 Golden Globes, having been nominated in two categories, the experience will surely leave an indelible impression. To her, it has gone beyond just pleasant memories.

Payal Kapadia lost the Golden Globe in the Best Director category to Brady Corbet for the film The Brutalist. Payal Kapadia had very little reason to rejoice at the 2025 Golden Globes since both she and her film, All We Imagine as Light, lost in the categories where they were nominated. But the director still held her head high and clapped for the winners. As she lost the prestigious Best Director award to Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, the filmmaker managed a big smile and applauded.

When the nominations were announced late last year, Payal became the third Asian woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes. For many, that alone is a big enough achievement since it has brought a lot of attention to her and Indian cinema.

The award ceremony took place in Los Angeles on Sunday. The following Monday, Payal reacted to not winning any award from the ceremony at Instagram.

Having attended this film event, she even shared a picture with the producers of All We Imagine as Lights discussing the loss.

The photograph features Thomas Hakim, Julien Graff, and Ranabir Das along with her, all set to leave for the Golden Globes ceremony.

“We didn’t win anything but had soo much fun (sic),” Payal captioned the picture she posted on her Instagram story.

The Director then went ahead to give a shout out to the designer Payal Khandwala and stylist Indrakshi Pattanaik for her attire. She wrote: “And a special thank you to @payalkhandwala for this amazing outfit… and to @styledbyindrakshi for being the kindest, smartest stylist who helped me feel so confident”.

Payal donned a beautiful handwoven jumpsuit made from matte lightweight silk for the gala event. The black jumpsuit’s sleek design is complemented by an intricate brocade detail on the pockets and its exclusive loop neck trademark design of the brand, which gives a stylishly elegant silhouette.

Payal’s All We Imagine As Light, which had the potential to make history, could not add a win to its name in the Golden Globe awards. At the 82nd installment of the awards ceremony, the film lost in the category of Best Non-English Language Motion Picture to the film proposed by France called Emilia Perez. The award of Best Director went to Brady Corbet for his film The Brutalist, which meant that she lost out on this big honor too.

About The film

All We Imagine As Light was the very first from India to bag the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival last year. It is about two very Malayali nurses, Prabha and Anu, whom destiny brings together. Prabha’s hectic life gets jerked around by an unexpected gift mail from her estranged husband, while Anu struggles trying to find a place to hook up with her lover. Directed by a homegrown talent Payal Kapadia, it features in its tribute to Mumbai, Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon.
