Nora Fatehi Initially Refused to film “DILBAR” because the Costume Was Too Revealing
Nora Fatehi has been quite popular for many of the popular dance numbers in some of the top Hindi movies. The Canadian actor-dancer recently claimed that she had turned down shooting the DILBAR song. In an interview with Rajeev Masand at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024, Nora remembered that she “put her foot down” because her blouse was “too tiny.”
Nora Fatehi on uncomfortable dance numbers
Talking about her inhibitions related to her costume in the Dilbar song, Nora said that she has always, when she was sitting with those filmmakers, said, “Look, we can make this into an item song and we can just look hot and sexy and end of story, or we could change the game and make this more into a dance-oriented visual, a dance-oriented experience where people don’t have to be uncomfortable to watch it with their families and kids.”
They can see it and say, ‘Oh, what style of dance is this?’ ‘See the hook step, man, that’s insane, I wanna learn it’. Most girls appearing in those songs are looking to expose some skin and voilà, the song is going to be hot anyway.
Nora Fatehi recalls another interesting instance from the shoot of ‘Dilbar’. The blouse they had provided was too small, she recalled. She added, “When they brought me the blouse, it was too tiny and I had to put my foot down. I said, ‘Guys, I cannot wear this. Don’t oversexualise me.”. I understand, it’s a sexy song; we all are sexy at the bottom line, but we needn’t be filthy. The morning, when we were just going to shoot the song they had to make a new blouse.
She added, “They had to reconstruct the new blouse that made me comfortable. To some people, it still looks over sexy maybe, but for me, it was whatever I was comfortable with compared to what they were going to give me.”

Nora Fatehi has highlighted wearing outrageous costumes of the past, especially during her Dilbar shoot
As a matter of fact, she said: “Sometimes choreography isn’t actually needed to come with such extra flair as well because for this song they wanted this heavy focus on a dance element.”. It is a sensual song, and we all have a natural allure, but there is no need to make it vulgar. When they came out with the blouse, it was really tiny, and I kept saying, ‘Please don’t oversex me’. So they did a new blouse that morning and got a duplicate of all the things made for the shoot. “The new blouse may still look sexy, but at least it was something I was comfortable in compared to the original option.”
At the recently concluded Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Nora Fatehi spoke about some of the difficulties she encountered at the very beginning of her career in the Indian entertainment industry. In an interview, recently, Nora Fatehi confessed that for two very popular songs – ‘Dilbar’ from ‘Satyameva Jayate’ and ‘Kamariya’ from ‘Stree’, she did not get paid. Nora also narrated an experience when she had refused to perform a vulgar outfit that was planned for a song.
Nora told Rajeev Masand that she had been doing unpaid work too because she actually needed the money to be able to cover up for her basic needs of living. She said, “I did them for free because I said that it’s not the time for me to make money, right now is the time for me to prove myself and to make a name, and to work with credible people.”
