Actress Deepika Padukone, also a mental health advocate, had recently taken on L&T Chairman S N Subrahmanyan’s controversial remark urging employees to work even on Sundays. Most people found the statement problematic. However, Deepika took it further by directly criticizing the clarification by the infrastructure giant. It has sparked national debates on the issue of work-life balance and the responsibility of the corporate leadership to employee well-being.

The Controversial Statement That Sparked a Debate

A statement that became virally infamous almost as soon as he made it expressed regret at his inability to make employees work on Sundays, where better time could have been spent in the office. His comments, “How long can you stare at your wife? How long can the wives stare at their husbands?”, not only had been tone-deaf but also trite about personal and family time.

Deepika, who has been vocal about mental health issues for a long time, was quick to condemn the comments.

She shared his statement on Instagram Stories, writing, “Shocking to see people in such senior positions make such statements.” She ended her post with the hashtag #MentalHealthMatters, signaling her alignment with countless employees who prioritize mental health over relentless work hours.

L&T’s Clarification: A Step Forward or Backward?

Following strong public outrage, L&T clarified its stance stating that Chairman’s statement is just a focus on devotion towards nation-building. It highlighted that it was responsible for building the country’s infrastructure and striving for it to become an established country with remarkable performance which needed extra ordinary effort.

Instead of dousing the fire, it further fueled criticism. Deepika did not blink an eye in reaction to the clarification. She shared it on Instagram and wrote, “And they just made it worse…” This response reflected her frustration with the fact that the company did not deal with the central issue: mental health and work-life balance of employees.

The Wider Consequences of the Controversy

Deepika’s response has reignited a crucial conversation about toxic work cultures and the unrealistic expectations placed on employees. In a country where work hours often stretch beyond standard limits, the Chairman’s comments reflect a larger issue—the normalization of overwork and the undervaluing of rest.

Mental health experts have long said that overworking is a contributing factor to burnout, productivity decline, and other long-term health issues. Dismissing weekends as idle time misses the point about the need for rejuvenation and personal space-the basis of any well-balanced life.

Deepika Padukone: An Ambassador for Mental Health

Since her public battle with clinical depression in 2015, Deepika Padukone has emerged as a leading advocate for mental health awareness. Through her foundation, Live, Love, Laugh, she has supported numerous initiatives aimed at reducing stigma and promoting mental well-being.

Her criticism of the statements by L&T resonates with her mission of making mental health a priority in all aspects of life, including workplaces. Being one of the first celebrities to speak out against the comments, she has challenged others to challenge corporate narratives that value profits and performance over people.

Role of Public Figures in Social Change

Deepika is a star so bold that one forgets that celebrities of this stature can influence so much public discourse. Her willingness to take on a corporate giant exemplifies the change India is seeing at its core – the conversations of mental health and better work-life balance. Her activism, too, has not only brought L&T to questioning of its practices but now so many practice questions are being asked in so many industries.

It leaves a wake-up call for organizations to think of a better approach about their employee’s well-being. As India is becoming a power in the world economy, it needs to also think of mental health and happiness for the workforce.

Deepika Padukone’s fearless response to L&T’s controversial remarks calls for urgent change: leaders have to lead empathetically, place value on personal lives of the employees, and recognize that a rested workforce is a productive one. In fact, true development is not in the construction of infrastructures alone but in society where people will thrive at work as well as in their homes.
