How Bollywood’s ‘Queen’ Kangana Ranaut went 10 years without a Hit at the Box Office
She once used to be the force at the box office giving historic hits, yet Kangana Ranaut hasn’t seen any clean hit almost a decade back.
She once was announced to be the finest female actor of her generation in Hindi cinema. In terms of sheer talent, that hasn’t changed over the last decade.
But when it comes to the box office draw, there is a wide chasm in her stature and what she has delivered lately. Multiple National Awards and past glories notwithstanding, Kangana has almost spent a decade without a major box office success. And early trends indicate that her recent release, Emergency, won’t be able to break the trend either.
When Kangana Ranaut Reigned Supreme as Bollywood’s ‘Queen’
From 2011-15, Kangana could do little wrong. The actress appeared in various films that she headlined alongside a ‘bigger’ male star, but all fared well. It was three times-in-a-row records for the female-led highest Bollywood grosser through Queen, Tanu Weds Manu and Tanu Weds Manu Returns. No star had ever repeated this feat in the past, and no other star has accomplished this since, yet this remained to be the pinnacle of this actress’s performance. Most film enthusiasts had expected the actor – then 28 – to go from strength to strength. However, a spate of bad luck, bad choices, and controversies affected her subsequent films..
Films by Kangana Ranaut in the last 10 years
Ever since Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Kangana has acted in 11 films, including Emergency, which was released last week. None of them have gone well at the box office. Barring one, all have been flops.
In fact, her last two releases before Emergency – Tejas and Dhaakad – were termed disasters due to extremely low collections. The only film of Kangana that managed to do decent business in the last 10 years is Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi. The 2019 biopic of Rani Laxmibai earned ₹92 crore net in India and ₹133 crore worldwide. But it came with a large budget and did not end as a clean hit, thus remaining an average grosser at the box office.
Kangana Ranaut’s Lean Streak Lately
While some of Kangana’s films had done decent business at the box office before the pandemic (mostly Manikarnika and Panga), post Covid, her films have tanked at the ticket window. Even before Emergency, her last three releases – Tejas, Dhaakad, and Thalaivi – had all been total box office disasters. The three films have a combined budget of ₹255 crore, but their joint box office collections are just ₹17 crore, meaning the box office revenue alone has been 93% short of the investment. Dhaakad, an action film mounted on a ₹85-crore budget, was the worst of the lot, earning only ₹3 crore worldwide.
Will ‘Emergency’ bring Kangana Back to Box Office Glory?
Emergency was supposed to be Kangana Ranaut’s magnum opus. With her being the director, Kangana had creative control over the film. And the subject is relevant too. But still, the sum remained less than its parts. Made on a reported budget of ₹60 crore, Emergency is struggling to reach ₹15 crore even in its first six days. This will not be an easy film for the movie to break even, continuing Kangana’s bad run of form.
Other Details
On Monday, Kangana took to her Instagram, sharing a video message thanking fans for the love shown towards the film while also commenting on protests taking place in Canada and Britain over her film.
“Doston mere film, mere vichaar aur mera desh ke prati kya lagav hai woh iss film se pradarshit hota hai. Aap yeh film dekh ke khud nirnaye lijiye kya yeh film hume jodti hai ya todti hai (My principles and my attachment towards my county are proven through this film. You watch the film and decide if it breaks us or brings us together),” she said.
“The intermission comes as Indira announces the emergency, and by then, you are close to giving up. But there’s a change of gears as you settle into your seats again, and Kangana finally takes charge. Some power-packed moments in the second half, combined with a few emotional ones, salvage Emergency.”. Kangana is a good actress, so you can forgive her for that prosthetic nose. Watch out for her, especially in the scene where she faces a huge personal loss.
