In a forthcoming episode, Amitabh revealed that he pretends to understand Bengali when wife Jaya Bachchan speaks it, despite having a shallow grasp of Bengali.
Bengali in Early Days by Amitabh Bachchan
Thereafter, Amitabh Bachchan could relate it to when his Bengali career as far as early days was involved relating the contestant Saurav Choudhary who also hailed from Kolkata, wherein Amitabh had once opted to join a Bengali Classes.
He worked in this Office of Bengal Chamber of Commerce opposite and used to share an accommodation over at Dalhousie where employees could opt and take Bengali Classes by learning it. For three months in – term course, three months in all, ending at its peak with an examination; he paid ₹3000. Much more than his pittance salary of ₹ 500. Amitabh cracked up thinking how he spent the ₹ 3000 in three days and so returned practicing his Bengali with friends over formal classes. He came out successful in the final examinations still.
But Amitabh admitted, he forgot to recall Bengali in just a short period. Now he claims he merely remembers two sentences: Besi jane na, ektu ektu jaane (I do not know much, only a little bit).
Fun Incident with Jaya Bachchan
Amitabh recounts a recent hilarious story of his wife Jaya when she was shooting a film in Goa. He recounts that there have been many instances where Jaya has to converse with someone quietly when there are other people around, and to avoid attention, she turns to Bengali. He also attempts to keep up with her but does so sometimes with complete ignorance.
Amitabh Recalls
“Jaya was shooting in Goa, and she called me, which rarely happens as we usually text. I got anxious, wondering why she was calling. She began speaking in Bengali because there were people around, and I couldn’t understand a word. I just kept saying ‘ha ha’ until I eventually confessed that I didn’t understand anything.”
The candid confession left the audience in splits and brought out the playful side of the couple.
