15 Glorious Years of ‘Ishqiya’ – A Tale of Love, Betrayal, and Unforgettable Music!
Irrfan was said to be the original choice for the role of Babban. Here are a few lesser-known pieces of information about the Vidya Balan-starrer Ishqiya, as the movie celebrates 15 years.
Ishqiya, directed by Abhishek Chaubey, created a flutter with its raw and sexy vibe. As the film completes 15 years, here are some lesser-known facts about the Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, and Naseeruddin Shah starrer.
Vidya Balan wasn’t the First pick for the Role for Ishqiya
At first, actor Preity Zinta was considered for the role of Krishna Verma played later by Vidya Balan. Preity even liked the earlier drafts of the script, revealed director Abhishek Chaubey to News18. But after the script was finalised, she chose to not do the film. At one time, Lara Dutta was also approached for the role.
In her role as a female lead in the film, Vidya Balan expressed uncertainty about a scene of seduction involving her character Krishna and Babban, played by Arshad Warsi. Referring to that sensual scene, Vidya said, “Fortunately, Arshad is a friend… I don’t know if I’d have been able to do a scene [where I put a co-star’s finger in my mouth], with someone else. The gesture of sucking Arshad’s thumb was so raunchy and so not me; I couldn’t connect with it all.”
Irrfan and Vishal’s Silent Feud!
Irrfan was producer, Vishal Bharadwaj’s, first choice for the male lead, Babban, whom eventually Arshad Warsi played; in fact, Vishal did not entertain the demand of a famous female actor who wanted to replace Irrfan. However, after the script was finalized, Irrfan opted out of Ishqiya, causing a fallout between the two. In an interview with Mashable, Vishal revealed that he did not speak to the actor for two years due to his own anger.
Wouldn’t it be Fascinating to see Kaleen Bhaiya in Ishqiya?
In an interesting turn of events, Khalujan was initially offered to actor Pankaj Tripathi and later went to Naseeruddin Shah, Abhishek’s co-star in Maqbool (2003), which was much acclaimed.
Gulzar’s Magic…
Lyricist Gulzar, in October 2023, has developed this iconic hook line with lightning speed for the film’s chartbuster song, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji. The reference given to him was a song, Abhi Toh Main Jawan Hoon from the 1951 film Afsana. “When Gulzar Saab heard the reference, he said, ‘Dil toh baccha hai ji’ immediately,” Abhishek Chaubey had said during an interview with Indian Express.
