Javed Akhtar, a beautiful writer, elegantly describes how he had a grand celebration on his eightieth birthday on January 17. And to date, all his friends have been his most beautiful gift.

January 17 was Javed Akhtar’s day becoming 80, as a screenwriter-lyricist, though he called it unpretentiously, “That is certainly a milestone but then reaching here is a same journey. They keep on going and come. Ultimately, it is all about the planet revolving around the sun; we made some birthday lines about it.”

Akhtar considered a quiet celebration of his birthday. “I was at my farmhouse. I didn’t want my birthday to be a big deal. Just called some really close friends and family over. There was a huge celebration at 75, and I think by now we have done everything. What can I do now?”

Javed Akhtar has been active for exactly five decades and is still going strong in the industry. He is not much over celebratory, but took some time off from the noise to reflect on 80 years gone by. He said, “Well, I do sit and think about that sometimes. I am thankful for life, it has been kind to me. To put it plainly, the balance is almost in my favour. There have been ups and downs, but I am in profit, so no complaints!”

Javed Akhtar states that the best gift he has received is that his children, filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, are doing well in their lives. “I think the best one, and the one I am thankful about, is my children. They performed well in their lives. Emotionally and socially, it becomes such an aesthetic situation if both of your kids have achieved so much. That’s the best gift I could have gotten,” he sums up.

He explained that the demand of the world from a person is one thing, but if a person wants to be truly type-cast against changes and exceedingly good in what he is doing, he has to love the work.

Javed Akhtar, a screenwriter, poet, and lyricist, told people that they could only look at them as valuable, as long as they were excellent in whatever they performed. It was in a session held in Janeshwar Mishra Park during the Repertwahr Festival on Saturday.

You could be a shoemaker or a gardener. But if you love doing it and do a great job of it, you are bound to excel by yourself: Some people aim to establish themselves as the others take them for granted; yet for some others, this is a chance to earn recognition from the world, which will duly reward them,” remarked Akhtar.

He alluded to the fact that the world demands from a person the greatest, but to perform excellently will require love for work. “When work is loved, it becomes totally a transaction between you and your work, right in the middle of which you attach self-respect and ego with the work. This means praise from the world is no more lasting for you; instead, you strive hard to better yourself,” he added.

When asked for suggestions on becoming a better poet and creating a better understanding of poetry, Javed Akhtar argued there is a need for good readers. “Reading provides the framework for understanding words and rhythm. Good poetry takes you beyond the dictionary. To comprehend poetry, one must themselves read some,” said Javed Akhtar.

The number of people wishing to hear Akhtar had increased so much that the programme was shifted from Shabd stage to a bigger Mahol stage.
