Legal trouble trails Diljit Dosanjh over alcohol lyrics at Ludhiana Concert

The Chandigarh college teacher Panditrao Dharenavar, who had lodged the complaint, condemned the singer for singing such songs while donning a pagadi (turban), even though he feels that such things shouldn’t be used for promoting negative values.

Singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh’s much-awaited New Year Eve concert in Ludhiana landed itself in a legal controversy over a written complaint lodged by Panditrao Dharenavar, an assistant professor at a college in Chandigarh.

Having taken into account the complaint, the formal notice is directed to the deputy commissioner of Ludhiana by the deputy director of the department of women and child government, Punjab, preventing the singer from performing specific songs during his live show on December 31, 2024.

Complaint also Contains Previous Recommendations given to Dosanjh

The particular notice addressed to local government authorities in Ludhiana reads, stating, “Ban on songs that promote the drinking of alcohol, including Patiala Pegg and 5 Tara Theke, clearly mentioning Case (Jeeb Vicho Feem Labbiya), even if these songs have modified words.”

The complaint also contains previous recommendations given to Dosanjh by many commissions, where he was advised to refrain from performing these controversial tracks.

However, the artist is still said to be performing, albeit with slight changes in the lyrics.

Effect of Songs Underage on Young Listeners

There was strong concern expressed by Panditrao Dharenavar, who filled the complaint, against the impact of such songs on the youth, especially with underage children present in the audience.

Further complicating matters, Dharenavar quoted a ruling by the Punjab and Haryana high court, which in 2019 ordered the police to ensure that no songs promoting alcohol, drugs, or violence are played at public events, including live concerts.

Such songs, according to the court decree, have a very bad impact on impressionable children.

Dharenavar also said he is ready to fight this issue in high court.

He accused Dosanjh of wearing a paagdi (turban) for singing such songs that should not be associated with bad influences.

A final Stop on India Tour

The Ludhiana mega concert was an impromptu last-minute addition on Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati India tour and wound up as the grand finale of his three-month nationwide performance schedule.

The last stop of the tour was supposed to be Guwahati, but the Ludhiana show got announced as late as December 23 and sold out within minutes of tickets going on sale.

In the course of recent weeks leading up to his Ludhiana performance, Dosanjh had already copped flak in many other cities for similar reasons.

He received a legal notice from the Telangana government for a performance in Hyderabad last November. The reason for the notice stemmed from a complaint about songs promoting alcohol and violence in the performance.

Also, during the artist’s show at Indore, the artist spoke about black-market ticket sales and put a defense against accusations against him that the price of his ticket was inflated after being reselling.

The controversy surrounding Dosanjh does not represent new lyrics in songs. Earlier this year, for making a comment about alcohol in his music, the singer was in the news.

Meanwhile, during a recent stage performance in Ahmedabad, the singer made a promise that he would never make songs on alcohol when the Indian government would impose a complete ban on liquor across the nation. “”If all the states declare themselves as a dry state, I promise I won’t sing about alcohol ever again,”” thereby said by Dosanjh.

However, with legal matters pending, there remains the good news: that Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati tour has proven to be a hit as tickets now sell out at every venue.
