After much anticipation, Kangana Ranaut’s political drama Emergency has received censor clearance and is now scheduled for a theatrical release on January 17, 2025. Set during the 1970s when the Emergency was declared, the film promises to offer a gripping exploration of one of the most pivotal and most spoken about chapters in Indian democracy.
Kangana announces new release date

Emergency’s certification troubles
Emergency has been in controversies for quite some time now, including condemnation by many Sikh groups. The biographical political thriller focuses on the life of Indira Gandhi, who enforced the 21-month emergency period from 1975 to 1977, when she was the prime minister. Objections against the film forced the Central Board of Film Certification to withdraw its certification, effectively postponing the first release date, September 5.
Kangana had told ANI then, “I know how I made this film. I did not get any support from the film industry. It’s made on a huge budget. I, along with Zee and other partners created Emergency, and now with the release delay, everybody is bearing a huge loss. Delay release is a loss for all. I think the Censor Board should take the responsibility to release this film at the earliest.
Co-produced by Zee Studios and Kangana’s Manikarnika Films, Emergency marks Kangana’s second directorial after the 2019 historical Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, co-directed by Krish.
Actor-BJP MP Kangana Ranaut announced that her much awaited film
Emergency, will be released in theatres on January 17. The update comes a month after the actor-filmmaker said the team had finally received the censor certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after the film missed out on its September 6 release date.
Ranaut, who plays the role of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in the political drama, shared the film’s release date on her official X page. The caption of her post read: “17th January 2025—The epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny.” Emergency, also written, directed, and co-produced by Ranaut, was mired in controversy after Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, accused it of misrepresenting both facts
and their comm-unity.
