Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’ wins Gotham Awards 2024
The film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ by Payal Kapadia won the Best International Feature at the 2024 Gotham Awards, thus igniting discussions on India’s selection for Oscar awards.
One more feather has been added to the cap of ‘All We Imagine As Light’ by Payal Kapadia. Laapataa Ladies was apparently not the right choice by India for the Oscars, but won the Best International Feature at the recently held Gotham Awards 2024 on Monday night.
Other nominees for the category included Green Border, Hard Truths, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Vermiglio. The Gothams Film Awards were held on Monday at Cipriani Wall Street in New York
The Acknowledgments of Kapadia
All We Imagine As Light also took home the top award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) 2024 on the Sunday just past. The Jury Grand Prize was given to “All We Imagine,” and Boong was named Best Youth Film according to the official APSA Instagram page.
Kapadia’s All We Imagine, which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, is the first-ever film from India to bag the Grand Prix award at this prestigious European gala.
The movie is a combination of Malayalam and Hindi, which talks about the character Prabha (Kani Kusruti)- a nurse in Mumbai whose life is turned upside down after the estranged husband sends her a rice cooker.
Anu, her roommate and colleague played by Divya Prabha, tries to scrounge for a private place in the city where she can spend time with her boyfriend. Parvati (Chhaya Kadam), Prabha’s closest friend, is thrown out by property developers from her house.
All We Imagine… is an official co-production between India and France, for petit chaos coming from France and Chalk & Cheese and Another Birth coming from India.
However, following its win at the Gotham Awards, many cinephiles expressed their discontent regarding its lack of a representation at the Oscars. “The Indian Film Board that selected the Oscars entry is looking like absolute fools right now. All We imagine is Light is poetry in cinema,” said one person. “Hoping it gets a nomination for something even though it is snubbed for Best Foreign Language Film-like in score or cinematography.”
A Tale of Sisterhood in Kapadia’s Film
Anu and Prabha belong to Kerala by birth; they are in the same hospital. They are also revealed to be roommates later in the scene. The chirpy young lady has a very young love life and is always eager to leave work early to meet her lover Shiaz (Hridhu Haroon), a nearby Muslim boy.
The big city, although huge, becomes apparently very small like a watchful little bird, where the subject matter is gossip regarding interfaith relations over other nurses in the hospital. There is a breathtaking scene in the movie where Anu sends kisses to her beloved through the clouds and, like a prayer, it begins to rain- as if the city itself is conspiring for these lovebirds to unite in some form.
