Reddit users criticize Rakesh Roshan’s claim about South cinema’s success: ‘Makes no sense!’

RAKESH ROSHAN

The comments on South cinema’s story-telling by Rakesh Roshan caused an unnecessary backlash on Reddit as users panned Bollywood’s arrogance.

South cinema almost dethroned Bollywood after facing stiff competition at the box office last year, renewing the South vs. Bollywood debate. Recently, Rakesh Roshan told Times Now that while South cinema may have advanced technically, it still holds to old-school storytelling.

What Rakesh Roshan said

Rakesh Roshan talked about the way he perceives South cinema is moving forward. “South films are very grounded. They’re continuing with the old-school format of song-action-dialogue-emotions. They’re not progressing. Technically, they are, but storytelling-wise, they’re sticking to the same formulas that work. They’re successful because they’re not breaking any path.”

He further added, “While they take risks on the other hand, South plays it safe”. He said, “We are breaking paths. After I made Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, I didn’t want to make romantic films again. Then I did Koi. Mil Gaya. After that, I made Rohit (Hrithik Roshan’s character in Koi. Mil Gaya) a superhero. These are the challenges we took. They don’t take risks. They play on safe grounds.”

Rakesh Roshan’s comments have been criticized on Reddit. One user commented, “Bollywood’s own arrogance is its downfall.” Another user wrote, “Regional cinema in general is far more inventive than commercial Bollywood. Roshan likely doesn’t follow anything beyond popular cinema. Only then can you develop such a perspective.”

Referencing Eega, another Reddit user pointed out, “Can a fly as hero Bollywood movie break any records?” Bollywood is still surviving on the same testosterone-fueled action films like Jawan, Gadar 2, Pathaan, and Animal. One Stree 2 doesn’t alter that. Dangal and Bajrangi Bhaijaan are almost a decade old now.” Another comment said, “This stinks of arrogance.” Slamming the filmmaker for his remark, one of the Reddit users wrote, “what nonsense did I just read.”. Thank god the audience is aware.

Meanwhile, Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho Naa. Pyaar Hai was released again in the cinemas on the 25th anniversary of its release. The movie marked the cinematic debut of Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel. Overnight stardom was achieved by both the lead actors with the release of the romance film.

What Rakesh said

During the chat, Rakesh said, “Gulshan Grover is a very fine actor. He was my first choice for the film. But he was doing a lot of films at that time. For 11 am reporting time, he would show up at 4 pm. This happened for a couple of days, and then I told him that this cannot continue.”. He said, “You take a few close-up shots of me, and then you leave me. I said I cannot make that film. I said we shall make another film together, and during the shooting of that, in the middle, I said to him, ‘Let’s part ways.’ He left.”

How the dialogue ‘What a joke!’ was created

That role then went to actor Aasif Sheikh. “He was very new then. I explained everything to him. I told him that you have a line here ‘What a joke! ‘ I told him that I won’t prompt you and it’s not written anywhere, you use it as you like it. When you organically feel that you have to use this line, you say it.”.
He said it only when he wanted to and I would say yes, this is the right way,” said Rakesh.Karan Arjun, produced by Rakesh’s Filmkraft Productions, also stars Kajol, Mamata Kulkarni, Raakhee, Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever, and Ranjit.
