Vikrant Massey’s “The Sabarmati Report” fails to impress at the Box Office, not collecting like “12th Fail”
The Sabarmati Report box office collection day 3: Vikrant Massey’s film based on the train burning incident in Godhra, Gujarat in 2002.
The Sabarmati Report box office collection day 3: Dheeraj Sarna’s film based on the Sabarmati Express burning incident in Godhra, Gujarat in 2002, stars Vikrant Massey in the lead role. According to reports, the film has seen a decent opening weekend at the domestic box office, though it still lags that of Vikrant’s sleeper hit of last year, 12th Fail.
Opening Weekend Box Office Sabarmati Report
The film earned ₹3 crore on Sunday, a marginal growth from Saturday’s tally of ₹2.1 crore, which again was a jump from the ₹1.25 crore collection on the opening day. Sabarmati Report opened better than Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 2023 film, 12th Fail, thereby becoming Vikrant’s biggest opening film so far. Growth was more in the case of 12th Fail both on Saturday and Sunday.
On its day 3, 12th Fail earned ₹3.12 crore, marginally ahead of that of The Sabarmati Report. The 12th Fail thus takes the opening weekend box office total back into the ₹6 crore-mark at ₹6.74 crore against The Sabarmati Report ₹6.35 crore. The Sabarmati Report was the sole other Bollywood release last week. Siva’s Tamil action fantasy epic Kanguva with Suriya and Ridley Scott’s Hollywood tentpole, Gladiator II, are its only competition.
The box office collection of Sabarmati Report
According to the report, The Sabarmati Report managed to have an all-round occupancy of 16.74 percent. With ₹ 1.15 crore on its opening day, The Sabarmati Report has yet managed to surpass his opening day figures of Vikrant’s 2023 sleeper hit 12th Fail. The Vidhu Vinod Chopra film minted ₹1.1 crore.
Will The Sabarmati Report see the word of mouth increase like 12th Fail? It will be interesting to see how this film produced by Ektaa Kapoor performs in the next few days, even as it faces stiff competition from the other two big releases – Hollywood period drama Gladiator 2 and Suriya’s action epic Kanguva.

PM accepts The Sabarmati Report
Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to an X user who appreciated the movie and tagged him with a video of the trailer of that film. “Well said. Well, this truth is coming out in such a way that common people will also be able to see it. A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Eventually, the facts will always come out!,”, posted PM Modi on X.
The film is based on the burning of S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express near Godhra station on February 27, 2002. At least 59 devotees returning from Ayodhya were burnt to death in the incident, which later led to the riots in the state. PM Modi was Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time.
At the trailer launch, Vikrant said that he has been receiving death threats for starring in the film. “I have been receiving threats. Without drawing attention to it, it is something which I am dealing with and we, as a team, collectively are dealing with, said Vikrant in a statement to the press as per PTI at the trailer launch of the film.
The Sabarmati Report is directed by Dheeraj Sarna and produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures and Amul V Mohan and Anshul Mohan.
About The Sabarmati Report:
By Dheeraj Sarna, directed, and by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures, along with Amul V Mohan and Anshul Mohan, The Sabarmati Report is a story that revolves around the real-life incidents of the Sabarmati Express burning in Godhra.
The trailer of the film throws up the ideological debate between Hindi speaking and rooted journalists and the West-influenced and superior complex of English reporters; the events, thus unfolding in the background, shape the politics and reporting of the tragic events. The film also stars Ridhi Dogra and Raashii Khanna.
