Two of the biggest stars in Bollywood are undoubtedly Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. Both stars enjoy a huge fan following, and their filmography boasts some of the finest cinema ever produced. Their incredible stardom often leads to the spread of rumors and speculation, one of which surrounded an alleged feud. The buzz began when their movies Dangal and Sultan, both of which had wrestling as a central theme, were announced one after the other. To put these rumors to rest, Aamir once narrated an interesting behind-the-scenes anecdote that not only silenced the rumors but also told how Salman played an unwitting role in helping him get Dangal’s title. ### The Alleged Feud

The speculation started when the Salman Khan starrer Sultan (2016), a movie about a wrestler, released a few months before Aamir Khan’s Dangal (2016). Fans and media houses started comparing the two films based on their similar sports storylines. The rumors continued to gain strength as media reports indicated a rivalry between the two superstars with some speculating that this was a case of professional jealousy.

Aamir Clears the Air

Dispelling these rumors, Aamir Khan chose to talk openly about the so-called feud during the promotional campaign for Dangal. He reveals that there was no animosity between him and Salman despite the striking similarities in their films’ themes. In fact, Salman’s contribution to Dangal proved to be pivotal at a crucial juncture.
During the function, Aamir revealed how the title Dangal came about. Although the name was in the script right from the beginning, the rights to the title were owned by filmmaker Puneet Issar. Aamir wanted to keep the title but negotiations were tough. This is when Salman Khan came to his rescue.

Salman’s Role in Securing the Title

Aamir narrated that Salman’s close friendship with Puneet Issar had played an important role in getting the title. Salman, being a magnanimous person, readily agreed to intervene when Aamir requested him to do so. Without any further hesitation, Salman called up Puneet and asked him to get the title for Aamir’s film.
Aamir remembered fondly, “Salman called Puneet and said, ‘Unko title chahiye,’ though he was doing Sultan then. People thought we were competing because of the same wrestling subject matter. But that wasn’t the case. Salman really helped us out.

Salman’s involvement seemed to sway Puneet Issar enough, who, as he admitted that he was in no hurry to use the title and that Aamir’s team is welcome to use it instead.

Such gestures not only debunked all the rumors of a feud but also showed the respect, friendship, and love of two big stars. Aamir thanked Salman, saying such gestures are only a sign of solidarity that prevails in the Indian film industry.

Both the movies became huge successes. Salman Khan’s Sultan by Ali Abbas Zafar was a box office bonanza, which had elements of romance, drama, and sports woven into one story. Aamir Khan’s Dangal by Nitesh Tiwari was something of a global phenomenon because it was an inspiring movie based on the real story of the Phogat sisters who were wrestlers.
Despite their thematic similarities, the films carved out unique identities, with Sultan exploring personal redemption and Dangal focusing on familial bonds and empowerment.

What’s Next for the Superstars?

On the professional front, Salman Khan is currently busy with Sikandar, an action-packed thriller directed by AR Murugadoss and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The film is slated for release on Eid 2025, promising another high-octane performance from the superstar.
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan, who was last seen in Laal Singh Chaddha, is preparing for his next film, Sitaare Zameen Par. The movie stars Darsheel Safary and Genelia Deshmukh and is going to bring another heartwarming story to the audience.

This throwback reminds everyone that rumors actually overshadow the real camaraderie in Bollywood. Aamir and Salman were able to work together with regards to this title problem of Dangal. Fans often enjoy seeing these rivalries, but the stars in question mostly move above proving that in reality, what matters most is friendship itself.
The story behind the making of Dangal and Sultan is as memorable as their leaving their mark on Indian cinema in the end.
