ED questions Mallika Sherawat, Pooja Banerjee for Inquiries in Betting Case
Mallika Sherawat and television actress Pooja Banerjee have recorded their statements with the Enforcement Directorate in an investigation regarding money laundering related to a betting website.
As per official sources on Wednesday, the Enforcement Directorate has recorded the statements of an actor, Mallika Sherawat, and a TV actor, in connection with a money laundering probe against a betting website owned by a few Pakistani nationals, which also allegedly “illegally” broadcasts Men’s T20 World Cup matches.
As part of the probe against portal Magicwin, the federal agency has conducted fresh searches last week across Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune as part of the investigation into this case.
Mallika and Pooja, statements recorded
“The agency has ceased all communications with Sherawat and TV actress Pooja Banerjee regarding the staff whether by email or if by way of official representative, regarding some inquiry on this case,” sources said.
Mallika Sherawat, 48, shared her statement with the ED’s Ahmedabad office last week by enabling answers through an authorized representative and email while Banerjee deposed and had her statement recorded under the PMLA.
Since Sherawat has done a lot of Hindi films, Banerjee has acted in Kasautii Zindagii Kay.
As per sources, prima facie, both have understood to have undertaken a little promotion activity related to Magicwin and are not found to be an accused in the case. The agency, sources say, is going to question some more actors and celebrities soon in this regard.
The ED mentioned in a statement released on Tuesday that it is probing a “launch party” held for the portal in which many “B-towners” participated and endorsed Magicwin.
These stars actually did a video and a photoshoot with Magicwin and posted them for his “promotion” on their social media accounts. Hoardings for out-of-home- (OOH-) advertisements were also executed within various geographies within India, including Gujarat and Maharashtra, said the agency.
The Case Initiation against Magicwin
According to the agency, Magicwin is a “betting” website “guised” as a gaming portal that is “actually owned” by Pakistani nationals. The money laundering case is grounded on an FIR by the cyber crime unit of the Ahmedabad Police in Gujarat.
Magicwin has been the case against
Magicwin is nothing more than a “betting” site disguised as a gaming portal and in reality owned by Pakistan nationals, claims the agency.
Most of the business at this website is carried out by Indians working or settled in Dubai. ‘The betting games displayed on the site are played in the Philippines and in several other countries into which betting activities are allowed,” he said, “but because of the investigation, it seems the same is ‘re-telecast’ on Magicwin’s site by stealing the APIs of the original games. “According to the agency, activities like deposit, placing bets, and withdrawal are all “managed” by the “owners” of Magicwin.
The ED’s examination established that the money deposited into bank accounts by the players/betters was “diverted” through walls of “shell and mule” bank accounts and that further the profit part of the owners was invested in crypto-assets, withdrawn in cash, or sent to Dubai through Hawala routes.
The winnings amounts by players/bettors have been transferred to their respective bank accounts through merchant accounts of several shell companies maintained with payment gateways. In addition, these amounts have been transferred to the player’s bank account through domestic money transfer.
These betting websites have over 50% profits generated from the total deposits made by the players, it claimed.
