Ananya Panday is a name to watch out for in Bollywood who has gradually been underpinning a significant mark with performances in diverse projects like Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, Call Me Bae, and the cyber-thriller CTRL. She is charming and carries an undeniable presence on-screen, but acting is no longer her only game. Recently, in an interview, she spilled the beans about her future career plans, taking inspiration from industry stalwarts like Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt. —

Inspiration: Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt

Speaking to Forbes India, Ananya Panday confessed that she has taken inspiration from the trajectories of Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt but also pointed to the former’s production journey as the biggest motivation. While continuing to excel as an actor, Deepika has entered production as well. For Ananya, that duality of being a part of film-making on screen as well as off screen is “like having a new life as an actor”.

She loved the combination of acting and production work. “It’s doing something completely different while still sticking to things they’re known for best,” she said. Ananya hopes to tread a similar path in the future, seeing a career where she can contribute from behind the scenes to meaningful projects.

While Ananya claims she does not see herself sitting behind the director’s chair anytime soon, she certainly finds a passionate interest in producing films. She has already had detailed discussions with her father, veteran actor Chunky Panday, about production. Explaining that being a producer gives the “power” to bring out of the box projects—ones that she may not necessarily act in but would love to see done—you find Ananya looking forward to her next career move.

Sometimes you read a script and you are like, ‘I would love to let someone else do this role’. She says being a producer, you can put those pieces together and make it happen. She believes that producing allows creative freedom so she can work on stories that really resonate with her vision.

Rising Star in 2024

2024 has been rewarding for Ananya this year, since she received great acclaim with the performance in cyber-thriller CTRL, wherein she really showed she could do a heavy role and get convincing. Another show that created waves this year is the comedy drama series Call Me Bae, wherein she made it relatable and quirky that the audience loved.

The actress has a few interesting projects up her sleeve. She will be featuring in C Sankaran Nair, a film that revolves around the life of a justice fighter for British India, in one of her next films. She will lead the romantic drama Chand Mera Dil.

Why Production Appeals to Ananya

Ananya says, “Filmmaking is not just funding but a narration craft.” Her focus is on the creation of projects which open up the minds of many to start exploring and surpassing normal thinking and boundaries that hold the stereotypes in place. She lets it be known that the role of a producer involves “permutations and combinations” in storytelling and talent, meaning every aspect of a project harmoniously coming together.

She develops admiration for Eternal Sunshine Productions led by Alia Bhatt and KA Productions under Deepika Padukone, as both have produced critically acclaimed films. Take the case of Alia producing Darlings, a dark comedy speaking on important social issues, or how Deepika’s production house has backed Chhapaak – a film on acid attack survivors.

These actresses have proved that production is not an extension of acting but a way to create cinema that leaves a mark, said Ananya.

What’s in the Future for Ananya?

With ambitions as diverse as these, Ananya is only growing as an artist. As an actor or producer, she aims to entertain and inspire audiences with stories that matter.

With her body of work and projects lined up in the pipeline, there is little doubt that Ananya Panday will be one to watch out for. It is her releases which are due soon that one should be excited about, along with, perhaps, sooner than one might expect, her debut as a producer creating content similar in keeping audiences hooked that her films will manage.

Ananya Panday’s Bollywood career is basically a testing and growth attempt through her career, always referring to Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, who not only focus on acting but also take their productions forward with great stories. What a bright future is in the cards for this young star, given that the idea of being a modern Bollywood actress takes on new meanings.
