Karan Johar , Dharama Production

Karan Johar is undoubtedly one of the finest film-makers in Bollywood along with being the personality with his own banner ‘Dharma Productions’. The film-maker was seen making headlines lately, but this time, it’s not due to his films. Karan Johar sold 50% stake in his firm to Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla for Rs 1000 crores as an investment. For the first time since revealing his association, Karan Narain Karani spoke at the CNBC-TV18 Global Leadership Summit about his association and the future vision he had for the production house with his strategic joint venture. Humouring them with two possible new names for the company, the audiences were certainly in splits.

The Idea behind Team-up with Adar Poonawalla

Karan Johar revealed that the sale was to fuel growth and profitability. “That was the necessity in my view. It’s been over 15 years
since Dharma has been synonymous with innovative Indian cinema. I am proud to boast that we have made some of the most memorable films of Indian cinema,” he said, adding that a partner would only help Dharma Productions become the powerhouse it is today.

“Adar Poonawalla was the perfect partner,” said Karan, who highlighted the synergy between them. Long-time friend of Karan and one of India’s leading businessmen, Poonawalla brings immense acumen into business along with financial strength to drive it forward. Johar highlighted how Adar’s sphere of expertise is where profitability and growth become paramount yet Karan retains the full creative vision for the company.

He credits another prominent person in his words, sealing this deal to be the CEO of Dharma Productions, Apurva Mehta. Karan and Apurva took it further as if to say that Adar was going to be a boon that would take the studio to heights it never experienced before, thereby assuring its position as a benchmark Indian entertainment studio.

A Light-Hearted Approach to Renaming Dharma Productions

The two threw around an idea of renaming Dharma Productions, which Karan joked would be called ‘Pharma Productions’ or ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Serum’–wonderful homages to Adar Poonawalla’s pharmaceutical background and some of Karan Johar’s iconic film titles. Good-natured gags during the conversation only added this bond and creative spirit of this collaboration.

Karan wasn’t the only one who was peddling jokes. Actor Jaaved Jaaferi jumped into the fray and took to X (formerly Twitter) cheekily suggesting a new title for Dharma’s next film, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Serum’. The badminton back-and-forth added excitement over this very high-profile collaboration.

Dharma Productions’ Journey: Some Reflections

Karan Johar recalled the history of the studio by owing much to his father, Yash Johar, for establishing Dharma Productions in 1976. The company was primarily a film production house dedicated to his films, but now it is one of the greatest production houses with a fine portfolio of many varied films.

Karan admits that it wasn’t easy to sell a stakeconsidering the involvement of an external partner in what amounts to a family legacy. However, it aligns with his vision to ensure that the company grows and stays relevant to the rapidly changing landscape of entertainment.

“For years, it was about making films which were true to Indian audiences and staying true to my father’s dream of story-telling that leaves a landmarking impact. Today, with Adar’s vision for the future, we are all set to take Dharma to a global platform,” Karan said.

A Strategic Partnership for the Future

It is the first step for Karan Johar on the new journey of Dharma Productions. “I am excited about the content, which will now cut across cultures and talk to all ages, races, and places,” he says. “We will pursue new-age storytelling, increase our digital footprint, and become a global entertainment brand.”.

It’s about finding a balance between creative storytelling and executable business strategy. Adar’s insights will let us keep the soul of Dharma while scaling in ways we simply can’t before,” Karan added.

The Road Ahead

While Dharma Productions gets ready for this juncture to be cherished, fans and film enthusiasts breathe eagerly with anticipation. With over four decades of cinematic excellence, Dharma Productions has stood at the heart of Indian cinema, churning out films that have shaped popular culture in unforgettable ways.

The coming together of Karan Johar with Adar Poonawalla will be perfect in terms of creative storytelling and visionary business strategies to continue Dharma Productions as a powerhouse in Indian and global entertainment. Though the jests for renaming the company might remain just jokes, the optimism and excitement surrounding this storied partnership are palpable.

From Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Serum to bold new narratives in exploration, Dharma Productions is well poised to redefine its legacy while keeping the essence alive.
