Telangana Government Issues Notice to Diljit Dosanjh for His Hyderabad Concert

There is much-awaited concert Dil-Luminati, by popular Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, scheduled for tonight at GMR Arena, Hyderabad. But before stepping into the venue for the concert, this artist himself received a legal notice from the Telangana government with a directive not to sing songs that promote alcohol, drugs, or violence.

Complainant’s Pre-emptive Action

The order was issued by the district welfare officer of the Department of Welfare of Women and Children, Disabled and Senior Citizens in Rangareddy district on 7 November, after the Chandigarh-based professor Panditrao Dharenavar lodged a complaint. Prof Dharenavar had provided video evidence of Dosanjh singing songs with themes of alcohol, drugs, and violent overtones live on television at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 26 and 27.

The notice continued, “We are issuing this notice in advance to deter promoting these in your live show,”

What was interesting about the legal notice that restricted the musical performances related to contemporary controversies is that it specifically asked Dosanjh not to allow children on stage. It said that these were being prohibited out of apprehensions of high sound levels.

According to the World Health Organisation, adults should not be exposed to sounds with a peak sound pressure level above 140 decibels. For children, the level is reduced to 120 decibels. Therefore, children should not be used on stage during your live show where peak sound pressure exceeds 120 decibels, ” the notice stated.

There is an explicit statement saying that viewers under the age of 13 are allowed to watch, yet the show alerts the viewer to the fact that there is possible harm in the form of damage from loud noises and flashing lights used in the performance which has been known to harm a child’s hearing and health.

History of Controversy

Dosanjh

Such is the negativity that seems to have surrounded the Punjabi music in general and the work done by Dosanjh in particular that the songs coming from Punjab are being blamed to give fans a message of gun culture, violence, and even use of drugs. It was in 2020 that the late singer Sidhu Moose Wala was accused of promoting gun violence when there was his song Sanju, which had been based on the case filed against him under the Arms Act.

A few of the “hit” songs that critics have said promote alcoholism are Patiala Peg and 5 Taara by Diljit Dosanjh. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had publicly cautioned singers against promoting violence and drug culture through their songs, stating the kind of influence such content might have on the minds of youngsters, way back in February this year.

In what almost seems like a controversy, enthusiasm for Dosanjh’s concert remains high. Dil-Luminati concert is scheduled at GMR Arena and will take place at 7 pm. The estimated over 20,000 fans are expected to attend. Avinash Mohanty, the Cyberabad Police Commissioner, ensured that adequate police personnel were deployed to manage traffic and control crowds so that public safety was not compromised during the event.

We have no particular curbs from our side, said Mohanty, who added that security arrangements had been put in place for smooth proceedings.

Diljit Reaches Hyderabad

Dosanjh

Dosanjh left for Hyderabad on Wednesday and didn’t waste much time before checking out the city’s landmarks. On social media, he shared glimpses of his visit, a video where he rode an auto-rickshaw and visited historic Charminar. A video on X has thrilled his fans, framing Dosanjh as casual and relatable.

A Balancing Act

While Diljit Dosanjh is worshipped for energetic performances and soulful voices, this criticism reminds one of the roles artists play in fashioning cultural conversations. Is it not a guarantee that all aspects of the event will be stringent on the criteria of ethics and society by a pre-emptive legal notice from the Telangana government?.

While fans wait for this Dil-Luminati concert, only time will tell if Dosanjh could make it through the restrictions in the same kind of fiery performance that one actually expects from him. The concert would be a junction for the celebrations but for the nurturing of accountability and sensitivity towards culture also in the arena of entertainment.
