Nayanthara Speaks out on Her Open Letter to Dhanush: “Courage comes from the Truth”
The famous South Indian actress Nayanthara has recently attracted widespread attention with an open letter to her former co-star and producer, Dhanush. She had written a letter in response to a lawsuit filed by Dhanush against her for using a clip from his 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan without permission in her Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale. She had kept quiet over the whole matter of publishing the letter but has now spoken to The Hollywood Reporter India on the issue.

“If I hadn’t spoken out now, when things had already gone too far, I don’t think anybody would ever have the courage to stand up for themselves again.”
Responding to allegations that her letter was a publicity stunt for her Netflix documentary, she flatly rejected the accusations:
“Why should I be afraid of doing something that I feel is right? I should be afraid only if I am doing something wrong. I’m not a person who will defile somebody’s image just for the sake of publicity.”

At the heart of the controversy is a clip from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which Nayanthara is accused of having tried to include in her documentary. The 2015 film was directed by her husband Vignesh Shivan and it was produced under his banner, Wunderbar Films, by Dhanush. Nayanthara said she wanted to include only four lines from the film that meant a lot to her as a person:
“The lines captured our life, our love, and our children,” she said, and the lines mattered emotionally for them both.
But Dhanush moved on to file a case of unauthorized usage of the footage. Nayanthara said that the final footage that has been used in the documentary was a behind-the-scenes footage shot by a member of the crew and not a part of the film.
“People don’t realize that behind-the-scenes footage wasn’t part of the contract then, as it is now,” she clarified. This distinction, she argued, meant the clip didn’t qualify as official footage covered under legal agreements.

Nayanthara criticized Dhanush for opting to go to court instead of settling the matter amicably. She felt that Dhanush, being a popular and known actor, could have approached the matter more sensitively.
“I was hoping he would just let it go, but he just blew it out of proportion after the trailer came out,” she said, terming his reaction “unfair.”
